Before the beginning of the Six Chair Challenge, Simon and his fellow judges discovered which categories they’d be mentoring during this year’s competition, with the music mogul landing the ‘over 25s’ category.

Taking to his Twitter after the episode aired, he apologised for his *ahem* colourful language, writing: “Sorry for swearing on the show tonight... it's not big and it's not clever.”

Simon also retweeted a message from one viewer, who wrote: “I hope you have also extended that apology to the contestants in your category”, insisting that he had already done so.

We’re still not sure exactly what Simon’s problem is, particularly given that last year he got two acts from the ‘over 25s’ category, Ben Haenow and Fleur East, through to the live final, with the previous year’s winner, Sam Bailey, also falling into that age bracket.

The beginning of this year’s six chair challenge was as brutal as ever, with Rita Ora facing the full wrath of the audience over a few of her decisions.

She now has her six remaining girls, who will be whittled down to three at judges’ houses, with a little help from ‘All About That Bass’ singer Meghan Trainor.

The Six Chair Challenge continues on Sunday's (11 October) ‘X Factor’, at 8pm on ITV.
