A superb video from Vox has managed to distill the complex history of the rise of the so-called Islamic State (IS) into a six-minute clip.
The origins of the terrorist group are traced right back from the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 to the present day where they now control large parts of Iraq and Syria and can launch attacks in European cities.
Along the way the video succinctly explains how 9/11, the Iraq War and the current terrible situation in Syria have all had an impact.
It forms part of a series of explainer videos from Vox. A previous one on the Syrian civil war has so far racked up over 1.7 million views.
