Murder Probe Launched After Man Dies In Christmas Day Fire

Detectives have launched a murder investigation after a man in his 60s died in a house fire on Christmas Day.

Police were called at 4.50am to the fire, which officers believe may have been started deliberately, at a house in Field Road in Forest Gate, east London.

Fire crews discovered the man's body inside. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Scotland Yard said the death is being treated as "suspicious" and a murder investigation has been launched under Detective Chief Inspector (DCI) Steve McCabe, of the homicide and major crime command.

Officers believe the fire was started deliberately. They are continuing with their enquiries to establish the full circumstances.

Mr McCabe said: "I need to hear from anyone who saw anything suspicious in Field Road and the surrounding area in the early hours of Christmas Day."

Officers believe they know the identity of the man but are awaiting formal identification and confirmation that all next of kin have been informed.

A post-mortem examination will be arranged.
