Google Translate Thought Russia Was Mordor. Awkward

For a brief moment in time, Google Translate thought Russia was 'Mordor,' - the fictional region in 'Lord Of The Rings.'

Other errors included changing the word Russian to "occupiers" and the Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov to a "sad little horse."

The reported automated error occurred when users converted Ukrainian to Russian.

However, the glitch now appears to be fixed.

Screenshots of the translations were posted on VKontakte (VK) a social network, based in St Petersburg that uses the Russian language.

In a statement to the Guardian, Google said the tool works “without the intervention of human translators”.

“Automatic translation is very difficult, as the meaning of words depends on the context in which they’re used. This means that not all translations are perfect, and there will sometimes be mistakes or mistranslations.”
