WhatsApp Is Now Completely Free As It Scraps $0.99 Per Year Subscription Fee

Hurrah, WhatsApp Is Scrapping Everyone's Most-Hated Feature

The instant messaging service WhatsApp will soon be completely free after the company's CEO and co-founder Jan Koum announced that it would be scrapping the $0.99 annual subscription fee.

Koum made the announcement at the DLD 2016 conference in Munich revealing that instead of charging consumers WhatsApp would be finding new ways for businesses to get in contact with consumers.

It's not yet clear what this might entail but based on how the messaging service operates it could be through sponsored messages or through adverts within the app itself.

The Facebook-owned company has been steadily growing its user base over the last 12-months while releasing new features such as voice calls over data.

Koum has hinted that the team are currently working on expanding WhatsApp's capabilities to possibly include video-calling as well making it a direct rival for services such as Google Hangouts, iMessage + FaceTime and even Skype.
