Ronan, who opted for Calvin Klein Collection with Chopard jewellery, was nominated for best supporting actress for Atonement in 2007.
She said: "I feel really comfortable, I feel like I'm in my sweats but a beautiful sequinned version of it.
"I was here about 10 years ago and it was the first awards show I had ever been to which is mad."
Ronan told ABC: "I wore green at my first Oscars as well. I wanted to wear green because I'm very proud to be Irish and Calvin Klein made this for me."
Brie Larson arrived in a royal blue gown with a ruffled skirt and jewelled waistband while her fellow nominee Charlotte Rampling, who is nominated for 45 Years, dressed in a sequinned monochrome gown with red earrings.
Larson told ABC: "I feel relaxed and zen, maybe it's because I'm jet-lagged. I flew in from Vietnam so I feel like I'm in another place but this is a childhood dream, I can't believe I'm here."
Rooney Mara, who is nominated for her supporting role in Carol, arrived on the red carpet with her father in a white lace gown with a panel cut out on her midriff.
