Sunderland FC's chief executive Margaret Byrne has resigned in the wake of the Adam Johnson child abuse case.
Johnson was last week he can expect a “substantial” prison sentence after being found guilty of one count of sexual activity with a 15-year-old fan. Jurors earlier found him not guilty of a second count of the same charge.
At the start of his trial the 28-year-old pleaded guilty to grooming and kissing the15-year-old after they met so he could sign a match jersey for her.
Police and numerous charities groups have been critical of Sunderland for allowing Johnson to continue playing after they were made aware of the allegations he was facing.
