Barbara Windsor is reprising her role for the final time, and there’ll be plenty of tears when she bows out as the soap icon.

Next week, we’ll see the former Queen Vic landlady ask her niece Ronnie to accompany her to a hospital appointment, and when they arrive, the doctor delivers some bad news, revealing that Peggy’s cancer has spread.

She then decides that she no longer wants to continue receiving treatment, preferring to spend the time that she has left with her loved ones.

When Phil learns of his mum’s decision, he makes a desperate bid to try to change her mind.

Barbara has already filmed her final scenes as the Albert Square matriarch, and has praised the soap’s team for the way her character has been written out.

“‘EastEnders’ did me proud, I couldn’t have asked for more,” she said of her final stint on the show. “They gave me great directors, great writers, and the people I love are performing with me.

“It’s sad but perfect. Everyone at ‘EastEnders’ has worked really hard to give Peggy a fitting send-off and I’ll never forget that.”
