In an unexpected turn of events, Kesha will be allowed to perform at the Billboard Music Awards this weekend, after being granted permission by her label boss, Dr Luke.
Kesha revealed earlier this week that the music producer - who she has previously accused of sexual and emotional abuse - had put the brakes on her planned performance at the awards show.
He’s now spoken out, insisting that the reason he put a stop to the appearance was because he was under the impression she was using the performance as a “platform” to discuss their ongoing legal issues.
Luke said in a statement: “Kesha’s performance on the Billboard Music Awards was always approved, in good faith. Approval was only suspended when Kemosabe [Dr Luke’s record label] learned Kesha was to use the performance as a platform to discuss the litigation.
“Now that Kemosabe has obtained assurances, that it is relying upon, from Kesha, her representatives and Dick Clark Productions that neither Kesha nor her supporters will use the performance as such a platform, the approval has been restored.”
Kesha had previously insisted this was not the case, claiming on Instagram: “I just wanted to make very clear that this performance … has never had anything at all to do with Dr. Luke. I was never going to use a picture of him, speak of him or allude to my legal situation in any way.”
Rather than performing one of her own songs, Kesha will perform Bob Dylan’s ‘It Ain’t Me, Babe’, adding: “I simply wanted to sing a song I love to honor an artist I have always looked up to.”
Kesha is currently fighting a legal battle to get out of her contract with Dr Luke’s division of Sony Records, having previously accused him of rape, which he has repeatedly denied.
At present, she is currently legally obligated to record a further six albums with Kemosabe Records until she is allowed to leave the label.
