PM's Resignation Most Tweeted-About EU Referendum Event

David Cameron's resignation was the most tweeted-about event surrounding the EU referendum, analysis from Twitter shows.

Approximately 13,300 tweets were sent per minute as the Prime Minister made his speech following the historic decision to leave, according to the social network.

Aside from the two days surrounding the vote, the most tweeted-about event during the campaign was the Great Debate at Wembley on June 21, further analysis from the Press Association and Twitter's #EURef data hub shows.

The website also shows that Mr Cameron was by far the most tweeted-about politician of the campaign, followed by Nigel Farage.

The data hub collated tweets referencing any of ten major campaigners - five from each side. Tweets that did not mention any of them were excluded from the calculation.

The analysis found that 41.7% of these tweets had mentioned Mr Cameron in the last month. The Ukip leader came second, with a 16.4% share of conversation, while Boris Johnson was in third with 11.1% share. Jeremy Corbyn placed fourth with a 9.1% share.

The data hub also categorised tweets about the referendum into four main categories - foreign relations, economy, immigration and security - using a range of related terms, again excluding those in which none were referenced.

That analysis showed a 41.3% conversation share about foreign relations, ahead of the second-most talked-about topic - the economy - which had a 39.5% share.

Perhaps surprisingly given its prominence in the campaign, immigration was only referenced in 14.2% of the tweets that referenced one of these topics. Security figured in 4.9%.
