Inquest Opening Into Deaths Of Five Men At Metal Recycling Plant

An inquest is due to be opened into the deaths of five men who were crushed when a wall collapsed at a metal recycling plant.

The victims, who are believed to be from Spain but were originally from Gambia, died at Hawkeswood Metal in the Nechells area of Birmingham on July 7.

A sixth man suffered a broken leg but managed to pull himself free after tons of metal and concrete fell on the work crew, part of the city's 10,000-strong Gambian community.

It took two days for emergency crews to safely remove the rubble and recover the victims' remains.

A hearing is scheduled to take place at Birmingham Coroner's Court.
