Police Pelted With Missiles As They Break Up Illegal Block Party

A squad of elite police officers was pelted with missiles as they moved hundreds of revellers from an illegal block party in north London.

Footage appeared to show scores of people running from the scene as officers from the Metropolitan Police's Territorial Support Group interrupted the unlicensed event and confiscated the sound system.

Some officers suffered minor injuries as the crowd threw bottles and other items. Scotland Yard said some police vehicles were also damaged.

Large crowds had gathered on the Stamford Hill Estate in Hackney on Tuesday evening as the capital enjoyed the hottest day of the year.

Adverts for the block party had circulated on social media in the days before the event and Scotland Yard spoke to organisers.

But the party went ahead with revellers arriving at 6pm.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "At around 20:45hrs officers from the Territorial Support Group seized equipment from the sound system.

"Bottles and objects were thrown at police from the crowds in the area.

"Some officers sustained minor injuries, none required hospital treatment. Some police vehicles were also damaged."

There were no reports of arrests, although officers remained in the area into the early hours of Wednesday to monitor lingering groups.
