It's no trifling matter folks: we take our desserts as seriously as our puns.

Introduced by the British (but made much better by us), trifle has solidified its presence in South African homes. And with the festive season fast approaching, we know Gogo has probably already stocked up on the tennis biscuits and different jelly flavours for her famous trifle.

As delicious as trifle can be, it can be a tedious option - especially if every family meal is rounded off with variations of the custard, jelly and cake combination.

So we teamed up with food blogger Luyanda Mafanya and 2014 Spier Secret MAD Symposium grant winner Tebogo Makama who shared their favourite summer dessert options to surprise your family with -- or better yet -- a few different dessert options, just in case Gogo doesn't appreciate your "new age things".
