Emily Blunt And Dev Patel Among Britons Nominated For Screen Actors Guild Awards

Emily Blunt, Hugh Grant and Dev Patel are among a host of British stars who have been nominated for Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards.

Blunt is nominated for best performance by an actress for her starring role as a struggling alcoholic in psychological thriller The Girl On The Train.

Grant has been recognised in the supporting actor category for his performance in comedy Florence Foster Jenkins. He will compete for the award with Patel, who was nominated for the drama Lion.

In the television categories, 12-year-old British actress Millie Bobby Brown is nominated for best performance by an actress in a drama series for Netflix drama Stranger Things.

She will compete with fellow Britons Claire Foy, who received a nod for her performance as the Queen in The Crown, and Thandie Newton for Westworld.

British actress Naomie Harris is nominated for best performance by a supporting actress in a motion picture after playing a crack addict in coming-of-age drama Moonlight.

Fellow Briton Riz Ahmed is up for best actor in a television movie or limited series for his performance in crime drama The Night Of.

In the past, SAG nominations have served as helpful predictors of who will land nominations in the four Oscar acting categories.

Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone both received nods for their performances in musical La La Land, which is being tipped as a favourite for Academy Award success.

Gosling will compete for the best actor gong with Andrew Garfield, who has been recognised for his portrayal of Second World War hero Desmond Doss in Mel Gibson's drama Hacksaw Ridge.

Casey Affleck (Manchester By The Sea), Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic) and Denzel Washington (Fences) are also nominated in the category.

Blunt and Stone will battle for the best actress award with Amy Adams for her portrayal as a linguistics expert in sci-fi drama Arrival, Natalie Portman for her performance as former US first lady Jackie Kennedy in Jackie and Meryl Streep for Florence Foster Jenkins.

In the supporting actress category, Harris will go head-to-head with Nicole Kidman (Lion) Viola Davis (Fences), Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures) and Michelle Williams (Manchester By The Sea).

Grant and Patel face competition for the supporting actor prize from Mahershala Ali (Moonlight), Jeff Bridges (Hell Or High Water) and Lucas Hedges (Manchester By The Sea).

John Lithgow is nominated for best actor in a drama series for his performance as Sir Winston Churchill in The Crown, the Netflix drama about the early days of the Queen's reign.

He will compete with Kevin Spacey who is recognised for his performance as President Frank Underwood in House Of Cards and Peter Dinklage from Game Of Thrones.

Stranger Things actress Brown, who plays a girl with psychokinetic abilities on the Netflix show, will battle for her best actress in a drama series award with her co-star Winona Ryder.

The casts of Downton Abbey, The Crown, Game Of Thrones, Stranger Things and Westworld will compete for best ensemble in a drama series.

The People Versus OJ Simpson: American Crime Story, the drama about the murder trial of former American footballer OJ Simpson, scored three nominations.

Sarah Paulson, who played prosecutor Marcia Clarke, is up for best actress in a TV movie or limited series, while Courtney B Vance - who portrayed Simpson's lawyer Johnnie Cochran - and Sterling K Brown's performance as prosecutor Christopher Darden have been recognised in the best actor category.

Actress Lily Tomlin will receive the SAG Life Achievement Award at the ceremony ,which take place at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on January 29.
