Human Remains Found At Site Of Oxford Flats Explosion

Human remains have been found by search teams following an explosion and fire that caused a block of flats to collapse.

The family of Guido Schuette, 48, who has been unaccounted for since Tuesday's blast, have been informed of the discovery, police said.

Two people were treated for minor injuries following the large blaze and explosion in the Osney Lane and Gibbs Crescent area of Oxford.

Residents from 40 households were evacuated and the Red Cross was involved in helping people find alternative accommodation.

Police said a search of the Gibbs Crescent area on Saturday resulted in human remains being found and recovery of the remains was under way.

Thames Valley Police had made an appeal on Thursday for the public to contact them if they had seen a man matching Mr Schuette's description.

Chief Superintendent Andy Boyd said: "Forensic identification procedures will have to take place to identify the deceased person which will take some time due to the nature of the incident.

"Our thoughts remain with everyone who has been affected by this incident."

Locals described the enormity of the blast, with one saying "the whole of Oxford heard it".

Detectives, fire investigators and crime scene investigators are carrying out inquiries, but so far no cause has been given for the explosion and blaze.
