Empty House Collapses In Affluent London Street

Neighbours were left stunned in a wealthy London street when a terraced house collapsed without warning.

Ten people were evacuated from neighbouring properties on Sumatra Road in West Hampstead following the incident just after midday on Monday.

Properties in the area can go for more than £1 million.

Local resident Chris Simpson tweeted that the property had been boarded up and vacant for a few years, but had recently been undergoing renovations.

He said: “I’m assuming basement excavation could be a contributing factor (as is very common on all the adjoining roads around here).”

The London Fire Brigade said crews from West Hampstead and Battersea fire stations attend the scene and worked with the Local Authority’s structural engineer.

The scene was secure by 2.46pm.

Miraculously no-one was reported injured.
