In 1995 he made legal history in a successful civil action against Strathclyde Police for a racist attack on himself in 1991.

Over the years he has been at the forefront of anti-war campaigns, refugee campaigns. Aamer is best known for his campaign for Justice for murdered waiter Surjit Singh Chhokar which led two judicial inquiries and the exposure of institutional racism in the Scottish Criminal Justice system. Following the change in the Double Jeopardy the family campaigned for the accused to be retried.

In 2016 nearly 18 years after the murder, one of the accused was finally convicted of murder.
