Adam Benjamin is a London-based stand-up comedian and writer. He began performing comedy in February 2013 when he realised he was rubbish at guitar.
I was broadly in favour of a 'no' vote during the Scottish independence referendum. I didn't have much of a reason beyond still not being totally over America's secession 200 years before my birth, but I wanted Scotland to stick around. Ewan McGregor and Gordon Strachan and whisky... They seemed worth keeping hold of. I was mistaken.

Swimer clearly has talent, but is apparently prepared to operate well within its bounds. And unlike Mrs Brown, the result has no shortage of illustrious fans. Have expectations really fallen so low?

The validation of opinion, though, appears to have surpassed the pursuit of truth as a priority. Conversation recedes when up against the allure of wilfully ignorant point-scoring. How rich of us to hope for a diplomatic resolution in the Middle East.

For progress to be made, the BBC must fundamentally reassess the way it looks at female stand-ups. They are not a ratings tool but performers who can be just as hilarious as their male counterparts. Treating them as otherwise benefits neither the viewer nor the reputation of female comedians.
