Arnold Brown

Comedian, dubbed the "grandfather of alternative comedy" and noted for his enticingly slow delivery of surreal one-liners

Arnold Brown is regarded as a comic philosopher who inspires affection among audiences and universal praise from pundits. The Scotsman once described Arnold as "the missing link between generations of comics ... he has the catch phrases and eccentricities of his seniors, and the references and political barbs of the younger generation."

Arnold Brown first came to prominence at The Comedy Store and The Comic Strip. In 1987, he won the prestigious PERRIER AWARD at the Edinburgh Festival. He’s supported Frank Sinatra at Glasgow's Ibrox Park Stadium and top US comedian Steven Wright at London's Dominion Theatre. Arnold's unique comedy can be heard on the LAUGHING STOCK CD - A Guide to the Perplexed - and seen on the LAUGHTER HOUSE video - LIVE AT HACKNEY EMPIRE.

Over the years, he has made extensive TV and radio appearances, including his own BBC Radio 4 series, Arnold Brown & Company and BBC2 sitcom, The Brown Man. Other broadcast comedy includes The Beaton Generation, Stand Up 2, Talking Pictures, the Fred Macaulay Show, Arnold Brown in the Comedy Chair, Stewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle and Life According to Fred.

He’s made documentaries on Ivor Cutler, Stanley Baxter, himself (Brown on Brown), taken a look at the Just For Laughs comedy festival and The World’s Greatest Stand Up Comedians.

As an actor in radio, television and film, appearances include One Foot in the Cuckoo’s Nest, A Sense of Balance, Mordrin McDonald, Personal Services,Comfort and Joy, Esther Kahn, Liam and Young Adam.

He’s been the subject of the BBC’s Comedy Heroes and their Caledonian Comedy Arnold Brown special. His book - Are You Looking At Me, Jimmy was read by Arnold for a BBC Radio 2 series.
