Unexpected parenting challenge number 5,439 emerged last week when my 6 year old son presented me with his latest amazing loom band creation. He was really very proud of it. He had used You Tube to help him create it he said.

By the time we arrived at school she allowed me to put on her dress but nothing else. Amazing I thought. This was about modesty. She wanted to be covered up but remained in control by refusing to wear her pants or socks. She cried on arrival at nursery. I cried on departure.

As even more exciting new developments are pursued in season two such as a more electrical energy innovations from teams with the aim of this filtering into the everyday electric vehicle market, let's also see forward thinking in terms of equality.

Having spoken to hundreds of female engineers since I graduated in 2001 I can honestly say that having an engineering degree opens a world of opportunities. Women in civil engineering have told me how much they love their varied, challenging and interesting work.

There are other advantages to having alone time too: being able to read in bed at night for as long as I like, repeatedly watching Vikings (if I can't see my husband's beardy face and tattoos I might as well enjoy those of Rollo and Ragnar), not having to watch Arsenal, not having to wade through his clothes on the floor to get into bed, not being woken at 6.15 by his alarm every day.

In an ideal world the minute that a child is unwell or unhappy we would drop everything and tend to them completely. But it is not always that easy, especially when one is self-employed.
