Figen Murray

Mother of Martyn Hett

Figen Murray is the mother of Martyn Hett who at 29 years of age was tragically killed in the terrorist attack at the Manchester Arena on May 22 2017. Before his death she had a busy private practice as a counsellor, supervisor and life coach, managed and taught counselling students in a further education college, and ran training workshops within the therapeutic community and for industry.    In keeping with her ethical stance in maintaining the highest regard and care for her clients, Figen has officially stepped down from her profession due to the traumatic nature of the bereavement. However, driven by the same values that underpinned her work, she has continued to use her influence to create and promote a strong counter-narrative to extremism and hate. Over the last year she has been vocal both in national and local media, appearing on radio and television and speaking at events. She now gives talks to young people in schools, colleges, universities and prisons telling her personal story. Figen will also be holding discussions within the Asian community, focussing particularly on mothers.  She has stated that her personal measure of success is if her efforts can help bring about a change of mind in at least one person.
