Business can learn a lot from politics - and sport - in terms of managing public expectations. Companies are getting smarter at this game - down playing expectations in the business pages in advance of difficult results. But too often company leaders fail to control the narrative by overstating their ambition in the first place. Corporate Britain is littered with the bodies of business leaders who promised big and delivered small.
Talking often gets bad press. Some people do it way too much. However, most organisations and leaders don't do it enough, particularly when there is an issue in play. Whether you are a football referee, or Chief Executive of a care home from which a war hero has absconded, the rule is simple: When you have nothing to say, keep quiet. But when you do, make sure you say it or others will say something else that you may not like.

This is undoubtedly a headache to the Premier League, for club owners, and those who sit around the table once a fortnight. But they should think about what they are risking if they let Scudamore go. He has performed miracles at the Premier League, while continuing to support the rest of the game. To lose him from football would be a real scandal.

Michael Gove might not know it yet, but he is in for a fight on this issue. The running community are an impressive bunch; eternally positive, and as good endurance athletes always can, willing to sustain a campaign it believes in.

Reputation cannot be owned; it is the prevailing view of an organisation. Reputations are impacted by all publicly available data and coverage. An important component is the view, held by the public, opinion leaders and other stakeholders, of the industry an organisation is part of.

It's no surprise for me to read reports this morning of many runners completing the marathon and continuing to run to the nearest hospital to donate blood. These are hardy men and women, devoted to accomplishing their goals.
