Héctor MediaVilla

Documentary filmmaker and photographer

Héctor MediaVilla is a documentary filmmaker and photographer based in Barcelona, Spain.

He has a degree in Economics, an MBA from ESADE; and a post graduate degree in Cultural Management from Pompeu Fabra University.

Since beginning his photography career in 2001, Héctor has concentrated a lot of his work in Africa, Latin America and Europe, where he aims to visually tell the story of individuals identities, juxtaposed with situations and surroundings within these countries.

He has spent the last ten years documenting the brightly attired Sapeurs from the Republic of Congo, capturing the creativity and optimism of a set of men whose integrity and character shine through, despite the challenges they face. He recently drew upon this experience to produce a short documentary for Guinness that follows the life of these extraordinary men, as part of the brand’s new ad campaign.

Hector’s pictures have been published in international publications such as Colors, Geo, New York Times, Newsweek, Time, Business Week, Photo, Esquire and he has been recognised in international competitions including The Hansel Mieth Prize, Picture of the Year, Center Project Competition, London Festival of Photography Prize, Fotopres from La Caixa, and Photo España New Talents.

Héctor has exhibited his work internationally at Paris Photo 13, Musée Dapper in Paris, Museum der Weltkulturen in Frankfurt, Museu Maritim de Barcelona, Centro Cultural de España in Mexico and Institut Français of Kinshasa.
