Jane Duncan is a professor and head of Department of Journalism, Film and Television at the University of Johannesburg. Before that, she held a chair in Media and the Information Society at Rhodes University, and was the Executive Director of the Freedom of Expression Institute. She is the author of The Rise of the Securocrats: The Case of South Africa (Jacana, 2014) and Protest Nation: The Right to Protest in South Africa (UKZN Press, 2016). Her latest book is called Stopping the Spies: Constructing and Resisting the Surveillance State in South Africa (Wits University Press, forthcoming).
