Endometriosis is one of the most common gynaecological conditions, affecting approximately 1 in 10 women. It occurs when tissue similar to the womb lining (the endometrium) grows outside of the uterus, leading to inflammation, pain and infertility.

About four months ago I decided to complete a genetic saliva test, and whilst anxiety prevented me from clicking on the breast cancer or Alzheimer's risk results, I did want to know everything about my ability to detoxify, hormone health, neurotransmitters, and how my body deals with histamine, so I took the raw data and sent it off to a trusted company.

Painful periods (dysmenorrhea), are not fun in the slightest, and whilst a little bit of pain may be common, we definitely shouldn't brush it under the carpet and label it as normal. Our bodies are extremely clever and pain is its way of telling us that something just isn't quite right.

Now, as a nutritional therapist, I always ask people about their sex drive, because it's a big indicator of underlying health. Whilst my clients don't really see it as an issue, actually it gives me a clue into how their hormones are functioning and where we need to support the body.

After a month, the results came back, and as suspected, I had a genetic SNP (pronounced snip) at a gene involved in a process called methylation. It's called methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase, or MTHFR for short

The diet itself is all about getting your body into a state of ketosis, which is essentially when your body burns fat (either body fat or dietary fat) as the primary fuel, instead of glucose from carbohydrates. Ketosis is created by eating high amounts of healthy fat, moderate protein and low levels of carbohydrate.
