Watching President Macron's first televised interview this Sunday, two things struck me. Firstly, wow. This man is eloquent, considered, sensitive, confident, and inspires confidence in his ability as a leader and in France.
It's time that we challenge our politicians to stop solely debating over which London airport should have an extra runway or investment, fuelling the noise pollution and suffering of residents under its flight paths. If we shout loud enough, they have to hear the thousands of disgruntled residents... except, is that another plane I see heading towards us?
When a cult of personality for a previously "unheard of" backbencher can create public demand and expectation for that person to be front and centre within the party - far more quickly and easily than the social climbing previously demanded to get to the upper echelons of power - it will be interesting to see how this tactic diversifies.
