Kay Smythe is a graduate (Hons) of Plymouth University.

Her thesis is entitled: The Safe Haven Theory: a qualitative analysis of dominant paradigms in the development of student subcultures, recreational drug use and their impact on the leisure spaces of Plymouth, England.

She has a number of ongoing projects, including a series on the People of California, a documentary on East Los Angeles gang cultures. As of early 2015, she is also a widely published poet.
