Lara Platman

Photographer and Journalist who loves a challenge

A photographer and writer (photofeature) specialising in documenting areas of society that are often considered to be eccentric or endangered. My overarching ambition is to ensure that Britain’s living national treasures are acknowledged by a wider audience, as can be seen in my three published books.

Having moved into a potting shed to restore my own 1964 Land Rover Series 11a, I am also currently working on a personal project, looking at the history of woman in motor racing and aviation whilst hoping to get on a race track soon...I fancy a spot of old fashioned glamour with all the thrills.

If you would like to find out more, you know where to find me… Lara
The Passion Of

The Passion Of Motorsport

As a photographer I feel it is my duty to take you somewhere when you are looking at my work. Saying this I realise that out of all the arts, photography pulls the short straw for I always find has the confinements of the throw away culture we are so influenced by today and I return to my duty as a photographer - to help you escape.

Silverstone Classic With Freddie

Silverstone Classic With Freddie Hunt

Void of today's circus antics of fuel, tyre and driver bureaucracies, historic racing is always about speed, tactics and performance of the car. There is overtaking a plenty, there is room for error and there is total professionalism, perhaps because these cars are privately owned and cost a small fortune.

Tercentenary of Capability Brown at Heveningham Hall

I looked for my own 'Darcy' moment, for I was standing in the grounds of a sumptuous Grade 1 listed Georgian Suffolk mansion similar to Lizzy in Austen's Pride and Prejudice. The Hall was designed and built by Sir Robert Taylor in 1778, incorporating at its core part of the earlier house dating from 1714

Vogue 100 A Century of Style

What is beautiful about A Century of Style is that it is not only for fashionistas, or photography enthusiasts, it also will appeal to anyone who has an inkling of an interest in culture - whatever age they are - seeing as this exhibition does end up in the 1920's.

As Slow as Possible as Fast as Necessary

It is by some miracle that I am once again in the land that I love so much, Scotland, on this occasion, Islay. I am here to drive a selection of Land Rovers from the Series 1 of 1948 through to today's modern Defender. Why Islay though? Surely a spot nearer to home would suffice?

A Love Story in D Major

As I started my way back into the paddock I already felt heartbroken. I didn't know what to say. As we turned off the engine I remember people talking to me, I mean I could see them moving their lips towards mine. I could feel people asking if I enjoyed that.

Smart thinking with the Renault Twingo

A gust of wind is something of an understatement to the weather that we had last week, more like gale force and almost verging towards the hurricane, but still my little Renault Twingo glided through on the motorway with indeed some notice of the wind, but in fact we handled the weather pretty well.

Tea with Rauno Aaltonen, the Flying Finn

I met Rauno Aaltonen at 3am in Valence, France, during the Monte Carlo Rally Historic a few years ago and have been friends ever since. He knew me as the girl with the Leica Noctilux lens who braved the snow to shoot the start of the rally stage.

Opposites Attract: The Skoda Yeti and the BMW 1 Series at Geneva

The design language of Skoda (presented at the Geneva Motor Show this year) has improved with the front of the vehicle is more horizontally accentuated with a distinctive grille and redesigned headlights - they are now rectangular and the fog lights are integrated into the front bumper.

Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid

Neighbours came out to see why the cars had slowed to find a wire coming out my kitchen window attached to my car. They asked if I could park there every day, which I did for the week and we all enjoyed a 'slow zone' during this time.

Doris the Goddess of Wind (A Winter Holiday)

"It is always advisable to carry a tablet of 'Antioyl' soap, if it is necessary to use bare hands for a repair, you will nearly always find some grease on your hands and this is impossible to remove with ordinary soap."

The Art of the Blue Flag

Last weekend I had the fantastic honour of spending the day with the marshals at Silverstone for the Walter Hayes Trophy. Usually the last weekend in the motor racing season, the marshals all gather to catch up before the long winter break.

Remembering the Dowager Duchess of Devonshire

Looking up at the ceiling in the Theatre room, I had noticed the two chandeliers missing and asked where these were. The Dowager Duchess was also puzzled and the two of us, along with the Estate Manager went to the study to look in the large leather bound book of listed items of note... the Insurance Book as I called it.

The Magic of the Audi A1

It is this confidence that I hold in my head about the Audi philosophy, about this Audi car. The A1 is the only Audi I have driven so far and already I feel extremely assured that my driving experience in it will be a jolly good one.
