Human rights lawyer

Melanie Smuts trained as a human rights lawyer and has been passionate about new approaches to South African education since university where she was involved in and directed a number of education non-profits. In 2013, she founded Streetlight Schools -  a non-profit launching innovative schools model to address the achievement shortfall in primary education in South Africa through a focus on enquiry, collaboration, exploration, relevance and the use of technology to teach and learn. Melanie received her BA and LLB from the University of Cape Town and her LLM (Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa) from the University of Pretoria.
