This is not to say that the relationship between email and the average knowledge worker doesn't need a bit of rapprochement. Workers in the UK are using almost the equivalent of their paid leave, 29 days, on sorting through their inboxes.

With all the listicles of "World's Coolest Office Spaces", it's easy to forget that many of us work in places that I would describe as precisely that. Perhaps not quite as hostile as space (although take the last biscuit and office politics can get brutal). The office can be grey, solitary and most certainly deprived of any sign of flora, unless the salad languishing in the company fridge counts.

There have been small lessons (like learning the hard way that it isn't clever to Skype in your skivvies). And there are the big lessons that might make the difference between making it from one quarter to the next.

I sailed for a week in Turkey last summer and it was the best holiday of my life. I found the people to be lovely, open and kind. My heart breaks for what I fear will be a difficult point in their political evolution, as they struggle to carve out some very basic freedoms for their people, one of which is certainly a free internet.

Despite this, I can't blame people for feeling a bit bah-humbug about holiday workplace charity. I find giving very personal. It's a bit of a tinsel laden minefield. How much do you give? Anonymously or not?

I think vulnerability and shame are deeply human emotions but the expectations that drive shame are organised by gender. For women it's "Do it all, do it perfectly and never look as if you're working very hard" - which is a disastrous set-up. And for men it's "Don't be perceived as weak".

A Cornell study found the optimum temperature for productivity was approximately 25°C. But someone - Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg included it seems - always persists in the belief that "the cold keeps you awake!" Awake maybe, but shivering with mukluks on doesn't seem to say "high performance office" to me.

A culture of "presenteesim", the old-fashioned notion that to be productive you must be physically present in the office, is one of the most counterproductive, uncreative, and costly management approaches in practice.
