Human beings are inherently good, what is needed is compassionate and wise political leadership to steer and navigate through the challenging terrain. The world desperately needs recognition of human dignity, democratic values and respect for the rule of law. We desperately need more compassionate global statesmanship.
Dr Muhammad Abdul Bari MBE, DL is a knowledge-driven activist and action-driven academic. He is an educationalist, parenting consultant and author. His career began with Physics research at King’s College London in the early 1980s and he then moved into secondary teaching in the 1990s, taking an early retirement as a Specialist teacher in Behaviour Support in 2011. Since then, he has focused on writing, working with civil society bodies and mentoring young people. Dr Bari has had a long involvement with several influential voluntary organisations including the Muslim Council of Britain, Citizens UK and East London Mosque as well as a few large charities. He also served as a board member of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (London 2012). He is an Honorary Fellow of Queen Mary University of London and holds an Honorary Doctorate of Education from the University of East London.
The post-7/7 scrutiny of Muslims is complex and many, including sections in the Muslim community, are responsible for the unhealthy situation. But there is no denying the fact that some right wing news editors and politicians have directly contributed towards the so-called "Muslim Problem" in the country.

No community should be left to falter in 21st century Britain. Since Brexit, Prime Minister May has been talking about an inclusive Britain. It is time our government comes up with practical sustainable plans with measurable objectives to tackle the inequalities faced by disadvantaged groups like Muslims.

Post-Brexit Britain has seen anti-immigrant hate crime and racial violence in some areas; this has highlighted insecurity within minority and immigrant communities. Political leadership has to tackle this robustly, before this starts reversing the positive achievement.

In post-Brexit Britain when there will be natural economic uncertainty, our political class and media establishment have an historic obligation to keep our country safe from bigotry by being positive, robust and wise in their discourse.

On Friday the 24th June Britain woke up split through the middle, with a 51.9% - 48.1% majority decision to leave the EU. Very few, even the Brexiters, had believed Britain would leave the EU after four decades of economic and political benefit. To many it is now going to be a very tortuous journey for Project Europe which has helped keep the peace for decades after two horrific world wars in the last century.

Ramadan demands that Muslims be positively active and dynamic in their community and wider society. As a people of faith we have a unilateral obligation to work for the good of all. We have the obligations of good-neighbourliness, of being concerned for others, to share their joys and feel their pains and to provide support and help wherever we can.

British Muslims would be far better off if only they invest in knowledge and turn much of their energy into reading, learning, thinking, reflecting and reasoning. Revisiting the history of a pluralist Spain would be useful, as that would help them in comparing their better past with the thorny present.

In this year's month of Ramadan, which is only a few days away, Muslims in the northern hemisphere will have very long days of fasting. In London it is expected to be around 19 hours of voluntary 'starvation' from food, drink and physical intimacy. This annual month-long fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam aimed to create 'God-consciousness' (taqwa in Arabic) amongst believers.
