Women are speaking out and making an impact in an unprecedented way. Almost everything I've listened to in some recent news bulletins has been female focused. Angelina Jolie is a great role model as a United Nations special envoy. The comforting and caring attitude she projects is inspirational.

When the FTSE 100 has only four female chief executives there's a question that has to be asked: Why are more women not pushing themselves forward for more senior roles? My work as a corporate coach suggests the answer is primarily a lack of confidence.

Whilst I agree with the BBC for banning children's TV presenters from looking too sexy on air with their clothes, I disagree with them stopping red lipstick being worn on children's programmes. Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz had red lips and so does Snow White. Does that make them provocative?

Women can be more sensitive and think more emotionally. In my experience working with both genders, the women worry if they are worthy and if they deserve it. One client thought if she asked for more she would be sacked because her boss would be cross, and another though he wouldn't like her any more and would make her life difficult in the office.

Surely we can't all be expected to look like Snow White or Sleeping Beauty. Girls approaching their teenage years are becoming more vulnerable to outside influences and obsessive about their looks.

By allowing ourselves to focus on the negative this can send us into a spiral of unwanted thoughts that can drain us of our energy. Switching our thoughts to positive ones and happy memories can help us to feel so much better about ourselves.
