Nigel Owens

Rugby Union referee

Welsh referee Nigel Owens MBE is one of rugby union’s most recognised and respected figures.

Having refereed his first senior club game when he was just 16, he was appointed as an international referee in 2005 and that year officiated his first international between Ireland and Japan. Owens made his World Cup debut in France 2007 and has gone on to be a prominent figure on the international stage, officiating the 2015 World Cup Final to universal praise. At club level he has taken charge of two consecutive Heineken Cup finals and has overseen more European matches than anyone else. His decision-making, rapport with players, knowledge and interpretation of the game is acclaimed by players, coaches and commentators alike.
Nigel has talked candidly about his battle with depression, bulimia and his addiction to steroids and in May 2007, he came out publicly as gay. Although widely well received it was an extremely difficult decision to make, and came off the back of a long struggle with his identity that led him to attempt suicide when he was 26.

Nigel’s experiences and positon of influence have made him an outspoken ambassador for mental health awareness, support and the importance of seeking help when needed.
