Phakamile Hlubi

Spokesperson for NUMSA

Phakamile studied International Relations at WITS. Her journey to realise her goal began at the community radio station, Radio Today in 2009. She conceptualised and produced a current affairs show, Talk Mzansi, which was hosted by Brooks Spector, a well known former diplomat and expert in U.S. politics. She quickly moved on, joining regional powerhouse Kaya Fm, where she was a contributor during the 2010 World Cup. The sky was no limit for Phakamile. Within months she was snapped up by radio 702, where she worked for Eyewitness News, as a reporter. Some of her outstanding stories include the stampede at University of Johannesburg; the local government elections and recognition for uncovering police brutality. Phakamile’s next stop was at eNCA where she became a household name for her coverage of stories such as the Oscar Pistoruis murder trial; Marikana and the murder of Mozambican national, Mido Macia. Phakamile has been recognised by the government of Mozambique for her reportage of the Mido Macia case. She was recently honoured with an award from the former President of Mozambique Joachim Chisssano for her contribution in telling this story. She is also a contributor to a book about the case written by Helio Filimore, a renowned journalist from that country. Phakamile has a reputation in the South African media industry for being outspoken and fearless. Her reporting style is unique because her primary goal is to challenge the audience’s views, and to offer them an alternative perspective. Her desire to be independent is the reason she left mainstream media and established her own production company, Blaqstar Kreativ, which tells original African stories, as well current affairs. Blaqstar Kreative is an independent provider of quality broadcast content.  Phakamile is a skilled communicator who also offers PR services. She is also a motoring nut, who test drives cars to delve into her other passion, the future of car technology and eco motoring. She is also a prolific blogger, writer, social activist, public speaker and mom. Phakamile has a healthy social media profile. She is recognised by twitter as an expert commentator on journalism and social justice issues.
