Indie-rock musician and songwriter
Piney Gir is an indie-rock musician and songwriter; she hails from the American Midwest, home of wide-open plains with sunflowers that go on as far as the Earth curves. The âyouâre not in Kansas anymoreâ jokes never wear thin, because Piney embraces her heritage bringing it with her to the UK, where sheâs lived in London for over a decade now (yes she does have a sparkly red shoe collection & yes she wears a lot of gingham - but she's still very much a London Girl).
Today I have the pleasure of talking to the two people who are responsible for David Bowie's look in The Man Who Fell To Earth. May Routh created the beautiful costumes and Martin Samuel is responsible for that red, chic shock of hair.

For all the indie music lovers out there, you'll know that Loz Colbert is of course the drummer from seminal 90's shoegaze band, Ride. We've known each other for years, having briefly played in an Oxford-based band together for a bit, we reconnected over our involvement with Gaz Coombes. Loz drums for him. I sang BV's for Gaz's Matatour at the end of last year. Small world, swings and roundabouts, yadda yadda yadda = it's all good how that stuff works out.

I returned home and proudly showed my new P.J.s to my boyfriend, he gave me a blank smile. It turns out he is a Star Wars Virgin (how?) so I made him watch Star Wars and then fill out a questionnaire about it and my findings were interesting. So here goes...

I attended the press screening of Aaaaaaaah! a couple of weeks ago & the film completely haunted me. Images and thoughts from the movie were triggered by day-to-day life. In that sense it is extremely powerful and well crafted, well acted.

For those of you unfamiliar with the band Psapp, you might know them from their Grey's Anatomy theme song "Cosy In The Rocket" which kinda put them on the map of the mainstream (whether you knew it was Psapp or not).

I had the joy of tagging along with Gaz Coombes to Japan, he was in Tokyo to play 2 shows at Billboard Live, one of Japan's premiere music venues. The day of the gig, the Billboard bus collected us from the lobby, Duncan, Mikko and Adam have been at the venue for hours already setting up.

Has a record company ever taken you to dinner? I know that Jeffrey Lewis has some strong thoughts about that, but I have been lucky enough to have a few of these dinners, some in honour of me, some in honour of others, but never in Tokyo (until now).

Okay, I know, it's slacker and 'Oh-So-Western' to go to Starbucks when we should be eating the more traditional okayu (rice porridge), tamagoyaki (an omelette type of thing), tsukemono pickles (random pickled things), nori (dried seaweed) & natto (fermented soy beans).

The Robot Restaurant in Shinjuku was our next stop... It is surreal, from the moment you arrive at The R. R. your senses are attacked with pure bling and eclectic over-the-top-ness.

This second installment will not be a blog about jet lag because seriously how boring would that be? But it would be unfair not to mention it because it is significant. I.e. Day one actually lasted two days, one of which was spent on planes.

Already I'm excited to visit the place where trained parrots sing Beatles songs, The Robot Restaurant, and the bar where tiny monkeys bring you edamame beans (I have been assured that the monkeys are very well treated and only work for two hours a day).
