Sir George Alleyne

Director Emeritus, Pan American Health Organization

Sir George Alleyne, a native of Barbados, served as the United Nations
Secretary-General's special envoy for HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean region
from 2003 to 2010. Alleyne studied medicine at the University of the
West Indies and graduated as the gold medalist in 1957. He pursued
his postgraduate training in internal medicine in the United Kingdom
and the United States. In 1972, he became professor of medicine at
UWI. In 1976, he was appointed chairman of the Department of Medicine.
In 1995, he became director of the Pan American Health Organization
(PAHO) where he served two four-year terms until 2003 at which time he
was elected director emeritus. In 2003, Alleyne was appointed
chancellor of the University of West Indies. He was made Knight
Bachelor by Queen Elizabeth II in 1990, and awarded the Order of the
Caribbean Community in 2001. In 2008 Alleyne received the Science of
Peace Awardfrom the Inter American Heart Foundation. He currently
holds an adjunct professorship at the Johns Hopkins University
Bloomberg School of Public Health.
