Thomas Dunkin

New York based hairstylist

New York based hairstylist Thomas Dunkin is London born and bred. Hailing from a family that prizes creativity, much of his initial artistic training was at the hands of his painter father. He started hairstyling on a whim, as a teenager needing extra pocket money to fund his skateboarding habit. He began working at his cousin’s salon on Saturdays, and soon found hair to be a perfect outlet to explore and refine his own artistic vision.

In a short time, he began working at John Frieda’s famed London salon, and quickly rose in the ranks to a position involving product and artistic development. Having amassed a serious collection of photography books since his early teens, Thomas was only styling hair on photo shoots for a few months when he got his big break with one of his heroes of photography: a Nick Knight shoot for French Vogue. In 2005 Thomas relocated to NYC after working years throughout Europe. Since then, Thomas has had the opportunity to work with photo legends including Richard Avedon, Steven Sebring, Vanina Sorrenti, Ellen von Unwerth, and Raymond Meier.

In 2008, Thomas became a brand ambassador for Sebastian Professional hair care. In his role as brand ambassador he has keyed many fashion shows such as; Betsey Johnson, William Rast, Charlotte Ronson, Band of Outsiders, Rad Hourani, Alice & Olivia, Catherine Holstein, Michael Angel, and Zero + Maria Cornejo. Thomas lends his expertise and extensive knowledge to the brand through education, press events and photo shoots. He has a unique perspective on beauty and in 2012 started a blog; www.hairbythomasdunkin.com where he shares his insight on a bi-monthly basis. He recently started contributing and writing for Huffington Post UK and continues to create noteworthy and creative fashion images for ELLE, Marie Claire, W, Vogue and V magazines.

Thomas’s greatest joy is creating looks that are fresh and gorgeous. His warm personality and adept skills are called upon by leading Oscar Nominated and A list actresses like Michelle Williams, Rachel McAdams, Julianne Moore, Demi Moore, Diane Kruger, Carey Mulligan, Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen and Claire Danes. In an industry which allows for nothing less then perfection, Thomas uses his distinctive eye and well-honed skill to create hairstyles that are not mere carbon copies, but innovative frontiers.
