Yaya Mavundla

Trans Activist, Publicist, Blogger and Events Manager

Yaya Mavundla is a South African trans activist, publicist, blogger and events manager. Born and bred in Kranskop the rural area of KwaZulu-Natal. She is the co-founder of Mzansi Pride (an LGBTI pride march and festival in South Africa) and has remained the head organizer of the event. She is a judge of the biggest LGBTI awards in Africa, Feather Awards. She is a board member for Gender DynamiX, a Cape Town-based organization that advocates for transgender issues in Africa. She is the publicist for the internationally acclaimed photographer and visual artist Prof. Muholi. In the past she has worked with celebrity designers Quiteria & George, African themed retail fashion house Urban Zulu, media personality Lerato Kganyago to name a few. She is a Services SETA accreted mentor and skills development facilitator. She started activism work on LGBTI communities when she joined Durban Lesbian and Gay Community Health Centre as a youth leader in 2009 - 2011.  Yaya is also coordinating and featured on one of Muholi's most powerful series Brave Beauties. A series that speaks on gender politics.
