I'm delighted today to announce the launch of HuffPost UK Impact - our new page dedicated to issues, charities and making a difference.

Bringing together all the coverage we already dedicate to the important issues facing people in the UK, Impact will be your one-stop destination for finding out how you can get involved, give back and stay informed.

With Children in Need taking place today (as I type this, there are a number of members of the HuffPost UK team dressed in sumo suits wrestling each other, all in the name of charity), it is doubly appropriate to have blogs from Dr Miriam Stoppard on behalf of Plan UK; Caroline Davey, director of policy at Gingerbread; John Nuttall on behalf of Unicef; and Anne Marie Carrie, chief executive of Barnardo's. If their moving and insightful words don't encourage you to lend your support to their charities, financial or otherwise, I'm not sure what will.

On the theme of inspiring people, every Thursday we will highlight 'Our Greatest Person of the Week', focusing on an individual who has raised awareness or campaigned for a charity or an issue at a local, national or international level.

We launch today with the United Nation's special rapporteur on torture, Juan Mendez. A long-time campaigner for human rights, Juan Mendez experienced the nightmare of torture in his home country, Argentina, when he was detained as a political prisoner before being expelled from the country in 1977. A qualified lawyer, he was appointed General Counsel for Human Rights Watch in 1994 before becoming involved with the UN.

If you would like to nominate anyone as Person of the Week, just let the Impact team know by emailing david.hobbs@huffingtonpost.com.

Impact will not just focus on humans though - we're championing green issues and animal rights, too, so if you've got an opinion on those themes, or any others that are close to your heart, let our blogs team know via ukblogteam@huffingtonpost.com.

In the meantime, I'm off to raid the Children in Need cake sale taking place in the HuffPost UK kitchens.
