Check before you travel.

A major road through North Yorkshire has been closed in both directions after a lorry caught fire.

The A1(M) was shut between between the A6136 Gatherley Road (Catterick North) and A66/A6108/Middleton Tyas Lane (Scotch Corner).

Dramatic images from the scene showed a lorry ablaze in the road.

The lorry was carrying bales of hay, which quickly ignited.

The blaze became so hot that it actually melted some of the road surface, according to the Northern Echo.

This meant it needed to be relaid before the road could be reopened.

North Yorkshire Police and Fire services attended the scene.

Large tailbacks formed as traffic was sent on diversion around the scene.

The road was later reopened in both directions.
