Andy Murray And Team Mates Hailed For Historic Davis Cup Victory

Tributes have flooded in for Andy Murray and his team mates as they made history by clinching Great Britain's first Davis Cup title in almost 80 years.

Author JK Rowling declared the British number one a "superstar" while Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon suggested Monday's St Andrew's Day should be renamed St Andy's Day in honour of the achievement.

Great Britain's first title since 1936 was secured when Murray completed a 6-3 7-5 6-3 victory over Belgian David Goffin in Ghent, giving his team an unassailable 3-1 lead.

After adding the win to his Wimbledon, US Open and Olympic titles, the Scot said: "It feels amazing. I never thought we would have the opportunity to do this and I can't believe we did it."

Praise quickly piled in on Twitter from well-known faces in the worlds of sport, the arts and politics.

Prime Minister David Cameron said: "Congratulations to the GB Tennis Team for winning the Davis Cup for the first time since 1936."

Ms Sturgeon wrote: "Congratulations to Leon Smith & #teamGB on an incredible @DavisCup victory - & especially to the amazing Murray bros. What an achievement."

She later added: "Think we should rename tomorrow St Andy's Day."

Harry Potter author Rowling declared "tennis history made" after the landmark victory, adding: "@andy_murray is a superstar".

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn also branded the win "truly historic", saying: "Congratulations @andy_murray and the whole of the @BritishTennis team on your remarkable #DavisCup victory."

Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron passed on his congratulations to Murray and the team, and declared it "a brilliant victory".

Business magnate and Apprentice star Lord Sugar suggested it was time for Murray to become a Knight.

"Well done @andy_murray I am suggesting to the PM to award you with a Knighthood #sirandy," he wrote on Twitter.

Former England striker Gary Lineker said: "Britain wins the Davis Cup for the first time in almost 80 years. Perhaps now we can give @andy_murray the credit and plaudits he deserves."

Greats from the sporting world also pitched in with their praise for the British team's achievement.

Olympic long jump champion Greg Rutherford hailed the "incredible achievement" while former England cricket captain Alec Stewart said the fans should feel very lucky to have Murray on the side.

Tennis star Boris Becker declared: "Amazing @andy_murray !!! Well done Capitain Leon Smith and rest of @TennisGB ! U guys made history today..."

Arguably one of the simplest messages came from Judy Murray, the mother of Davis Cup stars Andy and Jamie.

Posting a message with an image of her youngest son on the deck, she declared: "Mission accomplished."
