Why I Won't Be Getting an Apple Watch

Don't get me wrong the Apple Watch launch hasn't passed me by. I've keenly followed the rumours, buildup and release of Apple's shiny new toy and there are many features that I ohh and ahh over.

Don't get me wrong the Apple Watch launch hasn't passed me by. I've keenly followed the rumours, buildup and release of Apple's shiny new toy and there are many features that I ohh and ahh over. I love the fact that the screen is able to sense pressure as well as touch. That the sheer wearability of it allows you to do stuff that only James Bond's could dream of, like opening your hotel door, paying for your milk and asking it to call your Mum. Despite all this incredible technology being condensed into a compact watch size, I'm not quite biting this Apple.

First and foremost Tim Cook hasn't convinced me that this device will do anything that my iPhone can't already do. All the apps on the Watch rely on them being on my iPhone - so why do I want a duplicate of everything on a smaller more fiddly screen? I'm basically buying an expensive remote control.

The health functionality of the watch was much hyped and speculated about, but as far as I can tell it seems to boil down to one main thing - it tells you to get off your arse. If you've been sedentary for too long it vibrates and sends you a reminder to stand up. While I can logically reason how this would get me fitter, I'm just not sure if I want to be reminded on a Sunday that my activity levels are on par with a sloth's.

Then there's the issue of charging. Apple claim that it lasts for 18 hours, which ultimately means you have to charge it every night. At the moment, however, I only have one spare plug by my bedside table and it's giving all its juice to the number one gadget in my life - my smartphone.

And the final reason why I won't be parting pennies for the Apple Watch, is that I just don't like the look of it enough. Don't get wrong I can be a fickle fish when it comes to fashion, and it may only take a couple of beauty magazines to convince me otherwise, but currently the design doesn't do it for me. I find it too masculine and - well - techy looking. I just haven't grown accustomed yet to interacting with a mini computer on my wrist which, for me, voids one of the main functions a piece of wearable tech should fulfilling.

MacBook tick. iPhone tick. iPad tick. Apple TV tick. Apple Watch Eeee-ehhh.
