Azealia Banks has offered something vaguely reminiscent of an apology, following her latest Twitter tirade.
On Wednesday (12 May), the ‘212’ rapper made headlines when she sent a barrage of racist abuse to Zayn Malik on social media, after accusing him of copying the idea for his latest music video from her.
She also hit out the UK rap scene, culminating in her being axed from her scheduled headline slot at Rinse FM’s Born & Bred festival.
Attempting to explain her actions, she wrote: “I said what I said to Zayn because I was angry. He felt as if he was too good to acknowledge me yet not too good to copy my creativity.
“I had to remind him that we’re both in the same boat in this industry and people of colour. By reminding him that no matter what you may think of yourself, the world still sees you as ‘other’, as they see me.”
She had previously tweeted: “Big apologies to anyone who was offended by any of the things I said. Not sorry I said it. But sorry for the way I made people feel.”
Azealia now appears to have deleted the offensive tweets, describing Zayn as a “token brown boy” and a “p**i”, among numerous other racially insensitive remarks about his heritage.
In the past, stars like Lily Allen, Rita Ora and even, bizarrely, ‘EastEnders’ actress Alison Newman have all been on the receiving end of angry tweets from Azealia, but arguably her most memorable Twitter feud was with Perez Hilton, who she famously used homophobic slurs towards.
