Boy, 16, Convicted Of Knife Murder After ‘Dreadful Escalation Of Events’

A teenage boy has been convicted of murder after he stabbed a man who confronted him in the chest.

The 16-year-old, who can now be named as Cameron Martin-Leon, had a minor disagreement with Alex Leonard on July 3 last year, West Midlands Police said.

The drunken teenager was behaving aggressively and had bragged about carrying a knife when he was challenged by Mr Leonard in Woodgate Gardens, Bartley Green, Birmingham.

Martin-Leon, of Allwood Gardens, Bartley Green, cut his hand in the confrontation and subsequently stabbed Mr Leonard.

The 22-year-old died in hospital after paramedics were unable to save him.

Detective Inspector Caroline Corfield, from the force’s Homicide Unit, said: “This case has been a tragic reminder of the dangers of anyone carrying a knife.

“This was a dreadful escalation of events which led to one young man losing his life while another faces a life sentence.

“Our thoughts are with their families, whose lives are also devastated by these tragic events.”

In a statement, Mr Leonard’s family said: “Lives have been destroyed and families traumatised. Life as we knew it ceased to be on 3 July 2017.

“Two mothers have had their dreams and aspirations for their sons shattered and broken as are our hearts and the hearts of everyone who knew Alex.”

Martin-Leon was convicted at Birmingham Crown Court.
