MPs have approved legislation to allow the UK to leave the European Union on January 31.

They voted 330 to 231 in favour of the Brexit withdrawal agreement bill, which implements an exit deal agreed with Brussels last year.

The majority of 99 is in stark contrast to repeated defeats inflicted on an agreement thrashed out with the EU by Theresa May.

Quitting the EU was facing an impasse until Boris Johnson called a snap election late last year and then won an 80-seat majority after promising to ‘get Brexit done’.

The bill faces one more hurdle. It will now go to the Lords – where it could face a more difficult passage as Johnson does not have a majority in the upper chamber.
