Chris Hemsworth has announced he and his family are donating $1 million to help combat the wildfires in Australia.

The Australian actor shared the news in a video message he posted on social media, urging his fans to contribute whatever they “can muster up”.

He explained: “Like you, I want to support the fight against the bushfires here in Australia. My family and I are contributing a million dollars.

“Hopefully you guys can chip in too. Every penny counts so whatever you can muster up is greatly appreciated.”

The video message was then reposted by his brother, Liam Hemsworth.

Chris also provided a link where his followers can donate money to the cause, saying: “Beyond appreciative to everyone around the world for their well wishes and donations.

“It really does make a difference, so dig deep! Love ya.”

The Hemsworth brothers are the latest Australian stars to donate to help fight the bushfires, with Kylie Minogue also donating half a million dollars towards the cause.

She said: “Last year I had the incredible opportunity of visiting some of the many beautiful places in my homeland for the first time,” she wrote.

“Returning home to such devastation throughout much of the country is heartbreaking.

“As a family, we’ve donated $500,000 towards the immediate firefighting efforts and the ongoing support which will be required.”

More than 20 people have died and millions of animals are believed to have been killed in the blazes that have ravaged the country in recent months.

At least eight people died last week in New South Wales and neighbouring Victoria, Australia’s two most-populous states, where more than 200 fires are currently burning.

Meanwhile, at Sunday night’s Golden Globes, Russell Crowe was unable to collect an award as he was “protecting his family in Australia”, but sent a message about climate change in the wake of the blaze.

As read out by Jennifer Aniston, Russell said: “Make no mistake, the tragedy unfolding in Australia is climate change-based.

“We need to act based on science, move our global workforce to renewable energy and respect our planet for the unique and amazing place it is. That way we all have a future.”
