Colin Farrell caused a meltdown among film fans earlier this year, when a first-look trailer for the upcoming Batman reboot revealed he’d undergone a dramatic transformation.

But now the Irish actor has prompted a similar response after being pictured on the set of the new blockbuster.

Colin is set to appear as Oswald Cobblepot – otherwise known as the classic comic book villain The Penguin – and has donned heavy prosthetics to transform himself into the character.

In pictures taken as the cast and crew filmed scenes in Liverpool, Colin was wearing a wig with a receding hairline, as well as a false nose and scars on his cheek.

He was dressed in a dark suit and leather coat as Robert Pattinson and John Turturro were also spotted in character as Bruce Wayne and Carmine Falcone.

Production on The Batman began in Glasgow earlier this year, but was halted due to the pandemic.

It resumed months later but was suspended in September after Robert – who plays the titular superhero – tested positive for coronavirus.

Filming continues in Liverpool after the prime minister launched the three-tier system of local alert levels for England on Monday, with the Liverpool city region placed in the most serious “very high” risk category from Wednesday.

A Liverpool City Council spokeswoman told the PA news agency: “The new restrictions in Liverpool do not currently impact on filming in the city region.

“The Film Office is working closely with every single production to ensure Covid-safe measures are in place and are being adhered to in accordance with rigorous industry protocols.”

The Batman will also see Zoe Kravitz taking on the role of Catwoman, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth and Jeffrey Wright as Gotham City’s police chief Commissioner Gordon, while Paul Dano will be playing the film’s main villain, Edward Nashton aka The Riddler.

The Batman is currently due for release on 4 March 2022.
