Remember when Mariah Carey got the world talking with her awkward New Year’s Eve performance in Times Square? Well, this year it was Cyndi Lauper’s turn to send Twitter into a spin with her singing.

The Girls Just Wanna Have Fun performer was one of the artists who took to the stage in front of a small, socially-distanced crowd in New York as part of the annual TV broadcast Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest (try saying that mouthful after a few sherries).

However, Cyndi left everyone with a lot of thoughts after her, shall we say, off-key performance.

First, she teamed up with Pose star Billy Porter for a rendition of her hit True Colours, which set the tone (or indeed perhaps not) for what was to come.

She was then heard shouting “I’m on camera! I’m on camera!,” as he glam squad appeared on stage, before launching into an EDM number called Give It Up.

The whole thing was pretty surreal, and soon became the talk of the Twittersphere...

Later in the evening, Jennifer Lopez took to the stage as the headline act, coming out on stage in a huge white coat and bejewelled mask before singing a slowed-down version of her hit Waiting For Tonight.

Introducing the track, a visibly emotional Jennifer said: “Tonight, we’re doing things a little differently, and that’s OK. This year taught us to be grateful for what we do have, and to cherish every moment. We lost too many, too many, to take one moment for granted.

“So tonight, we’re going to live, we’re going to love and we’re going to dance again. And we’re going to keep on dreaming.

“Twenty years ago I sang this song, and we’ve never needed it more than tonight.”
