Donald Trump has praised Boris Johnson as “Britain Trump” following his victory in the Conservative Party leadership contest.

“A really good man is going to be the prime minister of the UK now - Boris Johnson. He’s a good man, he’s tough and he’s smart,” the US president said on Tuesday.

Trump was speaking in Washington DC to a ‘Teen Student Action Summit’ hosted by the conservative campaign group Turning Point USA.

“They call him ‘Britain Trump’,” the president told the cheering crowd.

“They like me over there. That’s what they wanted. That’s what they need. He’ll get it done. Boris is good,” he said.

Trump then called out to Nigel Farage who he said was in the audience. “Nigel, thank you Nigel,” he said.

“He did a great job. I know he is going to work well with Boris. They are going to do some tremendous things.”

Johnson is due to be appointed prime minister on Wednesday afternoon once Theresa May formally resigns.

He used his victory speech to promise he will “energise the country” and meet the October 31 Brexit deadline with a “new spirit of can-do”.

Johnson secured more than two-thirds of the votes in the contest, comfortably defeating Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt.

But has been left in no doubt about the opposition he will face from his own benches if he attempts to force through a no-deal Brexit.
