On Tuesday morning, Ed Sheeran revealed to the world that he and his wife Cherry Seaborn had welcomed their first child, a baby girl named Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran.

However, before he made the official announcement, the singer broke the news privately to his good friends… Jedward.

Yes, shortly after Ed posted on Instagram about the arrival of his daughter, Jedward shared a screengrab of a DM they’d received from him a day earlier.

The message read: “I love you guys. Sorry I’ve been off socials for so long, just popping in to tell you you’re awesome and hope to see you soon! I’ve got a daughter now by the way, you’re gonna love her.”

“Hi Twitter @Edsheeran has some news for you and us,” the twins tweeted. “We kept it a secret obviously. Welcome Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran.”

It turns out the former X Factor contestants actually have a friendship with Ed that goes back a number of years, after the chart-topping singer bumped into them while he was on tour in Toronto.

“I love Jedward,” he told The Irish Sun in 2017. “[They’re] like a puppy, there is no way you can dislike Jedward. There is no side to them at all that’s nasty – they are just nice. For people not to like them is weird.”

He later told BBC Radio 1 that he’d even turned down spending time with a massive A-lister to hang out with Jedward, revealing: “This is going to be a bad name drop but I once turned down a party with Paul McCartney to party with Jedward. That’s a fact.”

Addressing his Instagram followers on Tuesday morning, the Grammy-winning star said: “With the help of an amazing delivery team, Cherry gave birth to our beautiful and healthy daughter – Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran.

“We are completely in love with her. Both mum and baby are doing amazing and we are on cloud nine over here.”
